History of the IANTD Agency
The International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers (IANTD) was founded in 1985, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of technical diving.
Its origins lie in the pioneering vision of Tom Mount, who recognised the need for an organisation that would not only promote the use of enriched gas mixtures, such as Nitrox, but also encourage a more technical and advanced approach to diving.
In its early years, IANTD focused on teaching and certifying Nitrox diving, becoming the first agency to offer courses specific to this gas mixture. This represented a radical change in the diving industry, as Nitrox allowed divers to extend their bottom time and reduce the risk of decompression illness. Acceptance and adoption of Nitrox in recreational and technical diving grew rapidly, driven largely by IANTD's educational and promotional efforts.
As interest in technical diving increased, IANTD expanded its focus to include more advanced technical diving courses. This included the development of programs for deep diving, cave diving, and rebreather diving, establishing IANTD as a leader in these fields. Its commitment to safety, research, and the development of safe and effective diving practices set a standard of excellence in technical diver training.
Over time, IANTD continued to innovate and adapt to changes in technology and diver needs. They introduced educational programs ranging from beginner level to instructor and technical explorer certifications, providing a complete educational path for those interested in deepening their knowledge and skills in diving.
Today, IANTD is internationally recognized for its contribution to the advancement of technical diving and its unwavering commitment to diver safety and education. With a presence in numerous countries and a network of highly trained instructors, IANTD remains a driving force in the diving community, inspiring divers of all levels to explore the depths with confidence and safety.
